HVAC Tip 5

TURN OFF CIRCUIT BREAKERS TO HEATING AND AIR DURING A POWER OUTAGE TO AVOID DAMAGING THE UNIT OR CAUSING A POTENTIAL FIRE HAZARD AND INSTALL A SURGE PROTECTOR TO PROTECT THE UNIT FROM ELECTRICAL SPIKES.
No matter where you live, severe weather can pose a threat to your home, your family, your health and even your HVAC system.  Power outages are especially harmful because they can cause electrical spikes to your system when power resumes that may cause damage to your unit or a potential fire.  There are two great ways to guard against such an issue and the first is to install a surge protector on your heating and a/c system.  The surge protector will automatically shut down all power heading to the HVAC unit if it senses an electrical spike.  Another way is to have every responsible family member educated on how to shut down circuit breaker controls to the HVAC unit in the event of a power outage.
Adopt a “better safe than sorry” attitude when it comes to your unit and have it inspected once or twice a year by a professional HVAC technician.  Severe weather or wear and tear could cause a safety issue that might only be exacerbated by spikes or outages.  The constant expansion and contraction of the heat pump could cause loose connections that increase the risk of an electrical fire.  Heat exchanger leaks or faulty pilot lights increase the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.  Having your unit regularly checked and maintained can go a long way in keeping your unit running efficiently and your family safe.
If you experience a major disaster such as hurricanes, tornadoes or flash floods, have your HVAC system checked immediately.  These events might have greatly affected your unit and can cause it to be unsafe for operation.  Before you ever turn power back on to that unit, it is best to have it examined by a professional.
